Urban Farmer Educator
Danica Lerner is our urban farmer educator for Pierce County. When she’s not growing vegetable starts for Farmer Frog, Danica reads a lot of books and listens to many podcasts because she is curious about everything. She is inspired when humanity’s compassion diminishes its callousness. Danica is part of Farmer Frog because she wants to invest her time and resources in building strong communities that foster healthy people.
Two women have greatly influenced Danica: her mother and Zsofia Pasztor. Her mother, says Danica, “raised me to believe that there were no limitations to what I could achieve” and “Zsofia came into my life serendipitously and before I fully recognized what had happened.” Working with Farmer Frog has given Danica an opportunity to seamlessly integrate her interest in science with her desire to affect change through a participatory experience. Some time after meeting Zsofia, Danica decided to obtain a baccalaureate degree in organic farming.
Danica has a children’s book dedicated to her titled, appropriately, Facing A Challenge. The author, Ann Donegan Johnson, inscribed the book as follows: “Dedicated to Danica Lerner, who has faced many challenges in the past and will face many more in the future.” “The book was written when I was 18 years old,” says Danica, “and the dedication has proven to be true—and I am thankful that it was.”
